Whats been going on...
In 2004 Beenie Man was investigated by police regarding his controversial lyrics. Accused of inciting hatred and murder against homosexuals, Beenie Man faced opposition from UK gay, lesbian, and bisexual action group OutRage! and a growing coalition of human rights organizations. Contentious lyrics such as "I'm dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays" (featured in the song "Damn") have led calls for action against Beenie Man and other Jamaican artists, including Bounty Killer, Elephant Man and Buju Banton. He has been the subject of boycotts, has been excluded from tours and was dropped from tobacco giant RJ Renoylds' sponsorship list. He has also been at risk of prosecution in the UK under the Public Order Act, the common law offence of inciting hatred and solicitation to murder under the Offences Against the Person Act. Many gay rights groups say that the lyrics of Beenie Man and others are part of a wider problem of violence against homosexuals in his native Jamaica.
In 2003, the UK LGBT rights group OutRage! called for the arrest in London of Elephant Man for inciting the killing of gay men in his song lyrics:The "A Nuh Fi Wi Fault" song boasts: "Battyman fi dead!/Please mark we word/Gimme tha tech-nine/Shoot dem like bird". "Log On" celebrates stomping and setting fire to a gay man: "Log on and step pon chi chi (queer) man/Dance wi a dance and a bun (burn) out a freaky (queer) man. Elephant Man was not arrested.
Sizzla has been involved in controversy over his anti-gay lyrics, and has been attacked in press statements by gay advocacy group OutRage!, who have translated his lyrics from Jamaican patois claiming they call for the murder of men who have anal sex.Lyrics from Sizzla’s songs reportedly include: “Shot batty bwoy, my big gun boom” (Shoot queers, my big gun goes boom); “Boom boom! Batty boy them fi dead” (Boom boom, queers must be killed); and “Mi a go shot batty bwai dem widdie weapon ya” (I go and shoot queers with a weapon). The controversy led to Sizzla being dropped from appearing at the MOBO awards, and cancelling tours of the UK and France. In November 2004 there was a UK police investigation of his alleged homophobic lyrics, and the British Government announced that they were considering banning him from entry to the United Kingdom.
